2025 Newark Academy Invitational

The team opened up the 2025 racing season with some outstanding performances at the Newark Academy Invitational.  The weather was not to the liking of our young harriers as the temperature climbed into the 80s and the humidity level was high.

First up was the Boys Varsity Race.  Ryan found the conditions unacceptable but went out and ran a great race.  He threw down a 20:10 which beat his personal course PB by 26 seconds (5 bonus Varsity Letter Points).  He finished in 15th place overall for a medal.

The Girls combined followed.  There weren't a lot of girls entered in the JV race, so the two races were combined.  Two of our girls produced outstanding performances.  Duaa crossed the line in 18th place for a medal with a time of 24:46 besting her course PB by 1:50 (10 Bonus V.L. Points).  Madison also ran well with a time of 29:25--a reduction of her course PB by 1:35 (10 V.L. Points).

And the best was saved for the final race.  Devin and Jackson were entered in the JV Boys race.  Devin ran 29:11 which was a full 1:21 better than his 2024 effort (10 V.L. Points).  And Jackson was the star of the day when he not only ran a 23:50 which beat his course PB by 1:48 (10 V.L. Points) but it was also a new career PB for the 5K distance.

Overall a GREAT start to the season.

All Time Top Ten at Greystone

The W+H Cross Country Team will be returning to Central Park in Morris Plains aka Greystone.  The team ran two races there back in 2018.  Greystone was the Psychiatric Hospital in Morris County that was eventually torn down.  For those who remember the TV show House M.D., the main building was used for the external shot in two episodes.

In 2018, we had only 4 girls, all Frosh.  So our returning seven should have a "good" chance in making the top ten.

Summer Running

For those who actually read the Summer Running Program, it was suggested that X-C runners should take the month of June off to "recharge" their running batteries.  It was also suggested that runners who belong to running clubs could continue their training.  After all, they seem to be the Energizer Bunnies of the X-C Team.

Charlotte has run in three meets in the past month and a half, the latest being the East Coast T&F Championships.  In the 400M at East Coast, Chaz set a PB in the 400M with a time of 1:05.04.  Back in May, she recorded a PB in the 800M with a time of 2:24.14.

Jolie also ran at East Coast and ran the 800M in 2:29.95.  Angel also capped off her W+H outdoor season with a trip to the Nationals in North Carolina.  She ran the 400M in 1:02.74 and the 800M in 2:28.15.

2025 Varsity Letters Process

For the 2025 season, X-C runners will continue to earn a Varsity Letter thru a point system which will encompass the entire season.  Runners will need to accumulate a minimum of 335 (not 334) points to earn a Varsity Letter.  Points will be earned thru three categories: attendance, meets, and performance.  Updates of runners' point totals will be posted three times during the season (every three weeks).

PRACTICE ATTENDANCE

5 points for attending each practice (from beginning to dismissal) from mid August to mid November.

3 points for each regular practice but is late.

2.5 points if a runner is injured and does not participate in practice (still needs to be present at practice).

1 point if a runner attends practice but leaves early and misses the team dismissal huddle.

MEETS

The schedule currently has 8 meets.  Those meets will be broken down into two groups.

"The Big 4" - the Blue Division Race, the GMCs, the Preps, and the States.

"The Basics" - the other four meets.

10 points if you run in any of the "Basic" meets.

5 points if you attend but do not run in any of the "Basic" meets.

15 points if you either attend or run in any of the "Big 4" meets.

PERFORMANCE

5 points for returning runners who attain a PB improvement of less than 30 seconds on a course they have previously run.  If the returning runner has never run on a particular course, the 30 second PB mark will be compared to the runner's career 5K PB.

10 points for returning runners who attain a PB improvement of 30 seconds or more on a course they have previously run.  If the returning runner has never run on a particular course, the 30 second PB mark will be compared to the runner's career 5K PB.

All courses will be new for rookie runners.  Once they have established a PB after three races, they will be eligible for bonus points.

EXAMPLE

240 - a runner attends 48 practices (out of a possible 52 for the year) and shows up on time and stays to the end
20 - runs in 2 of the "Basic" meets
60 - runs in or attends all the "Big 4" meets
15 - during the year attains 3 PBs less than 30 seconds

335 - Total

N.B. - Point requirement is subject to change due to number of races or cancelled practices.

Team Awards for 2025

Back in 2018, I asked the Athletic Department if more than three Team Awards could be given out at the RRN.  After all I was trying to develop two distinct squads within the Team, each having their own proud identity.  I was told 3.  No more than that.

And then at last week's RRN, I noticed that the golf team, which has fewer members than our X-C Team, awarded five plaques.  This puzzled me and I pressed again to have more X-C Team Awards and got an affirmative this time.

However, there will be guidelines set up by myself.

If there are 7 or more runners on a gender squad (for example we have 9 girls this year), 3 awards will be given out.

4-6 runners -- 2 awards

2-3 runners -- 1 award

0-1 runner -- 0 awards

So for the roster as it stands this very moment, 9 girls and 4 boys, we will be giving out 5 awards in June 2026.

Fifty Years Later

Fifty years ago today, my running idol, Steve Prefontaine, was killed in an automobile crash near Eugene, Oregon.  He was 24 years old.  In the eulogy from one of the two film bios of Prefontaine's life, his Coach, Bill Bowerman (played by Donald Sutherland), explains Pre's philosophy on what the real purpose of running is.  Fifty years later, it still applies to what YOU do every fall!!

2025 Summer Running Program

 I. Take the month of June off.  School is out and Spring sports are done.  After a full year of education and several seasons of athletics, you need to rest, recover, and re-charge.  Some of you belong to running clubs.  If you are still active in these clubs during June and early July, I won't stop you from participating, but I would rather everyone take the month of June off.  If you love running and are worried about "withdrawal", a light and easy run once or twice a week during June will be okay.  But the bottom line is we need fresh legs when we start our season in August.

II. Consequences.  If you come to the first practice in August in poor shape due to little or no summer running, six things are going to happen:

1. you will be overwhelmed when we start our first day with a long run

2. you will most likely suffer an injury

3. you will still do your summer running but it will be in August and September

4. you won't race until early October

5. you will be letting your teammates down, BIG TIME

6. you will automatically become a member of the "Tent and Water Crew" for the entire season

DO NOT do the summer running just to get it over with.  And there should be NO excuses for not completing the program.  If you are not getting anything out of it, then why are you doing it?  Are you trying to become a better runner?  Are you trying to help the team achieve success in the fall?  These are questions you must ask yourself.

Group runs are allowable.  This may be difficult since our runners are scattered across parts of the state.  But if some of you live near each other, try meeting up once in a while for a group run.  If you live near the school and the gates are open, you can run on our course.  Or possibly meet at nearby parks like Spring Lake or Oak Ridge.  Or even better, take a trip down to Thompson or Holmdel Parks where you will be racing this Fall.  Running together in the summer will only make our team stronger.  And I am always available to monitor a group workout.

III. Your program level.  This program is six weeks long and runs from July 7 to August 17.  It leads right into the first official day of practice.  It is important to build a strong base for the season.  Stamina and endurance are critical parts of having a successful season.  Below are several plans (levels) based on your experience.  There is no day-by-day plan.  Instead you just need to accumulate the target number of miles for each week which should be spread out over 4 to 7 days.

Here are the level assignments for 2025:

Charlotte (F5), Mohisha (F5), Duaa (F5), Anjali (F5), Shweta (F4), Madison (F4), Jolie (F4), Julia (F3), Leah (F3), Sanjana (F3), Kemi (F3), Mimi (F3), Helen (F1)

Ryan (M5), Ahmad (M4), Devindar (M3), Jackson (M3), Caleb (M3), Jerry (M3), Rishi (M3), Samyak (M3)

Example - if you are assigned as a "female level 5" you should total 30 miles from July 7 to 13, then 40 miles from July 14 to 20, etc.

IV.  Reports - every Sunday night or Monday morning I need an e-mail or a text informing me what you did for the previous seven days.  I will need only one number: the # of miles run.

Example:
    John Doe   33 miles

V.  Tips.

Surfaces try to pick a good surface to run on.  The best are trails and grass, followed by macadam (black-top) roads or walkways, and finally cement sidewalks.  Run on sidewalks only as a last resort but keep in mind they could be hard on your knees and their unevenness is dangerous for tripping.

Summer running does not need to include any speed work or hill running.  Try to set up personal courses that are relatively flat and long enough to get you the required weekly number of miles.

Heat - some parts of July and August can be very hot and humid.  Days of 90+ degrees with high humidity can be hard to run in.  Try to run early in the morning.  It is hard to get up early on a summer day when you don't have to but that is what Cross Country is all about.  The sport is 10% physical and 90% mental.  To be a good X-C runner you must be MENTALLY TOUGH.  And although waking up early sounds like an easy task, it's harder than you think when you don't have to.

Hydrate - always stay hydrated during the summer.  Drink throughout the day but don't drink too much before you go for your runs.  Too much water will give you cramps.  If you perspire a lot and you notice that you have stopped sweating during a run, STOP.  It means you are dehydrated.  But that won't happen if you stay hydrated throughout the day.

In conclusion, enjoy your summer and RUN!!

Save The Date

The pre-season meeting for the Upper School Cross Country Team will take place on Monday June 9.  The meeting is via Zoom, starts at 7 PM, and usually runs no more than 20 minutes.

For new runners it will give a quick glance of what to expect during the upcoming season and a reminder for the returning veterans.  Potential runners are strongly urged to attend but if you cannot and still want to run, contact Coach R to receive a recap.

Upper School Cross Country runners MUST be on board from Day 1.  Joining mid-season (September) deprives the runner of achieving their full potential as a runner and hinders the team's success as well.

A link for the Zoom meeting will be posted on SportsYou a couple days before.

Another Update

The RRN (Ram Recognition Night) has been moved up to Tuesday night June 3rd.  Hope to see you all there.

Blue Division Update

For those new to Cross Country, the Greater Middlesex Conference, aka the GMC, is broken down into divisions: Blue, White, Red, etc.  Every school's sport is placed in a division and a school may even have one sport in one division and another sport in a different division.  Every two years these divisions per sport are evaluated and re-aligned.  Some schools that improve move up a level, and some who are struggling move down.  This fall's season was to be the second year of the 2024-25 rotation.  But I learned today that the GMC overhauled the entire fall division alignment for all sports for 2025.  W+H Cross Country will remain in the Blue Division for 2025 but there will be a change or two.

BOYS - North Brunswick and New Brunswick are leaving and Middlesex will be joining.  East Brunswick Magnet, South River, South Amboy, Dunellen, and Perth Amboy will remain with W+H making it a seven team division.

GIRLS - New Brunswick, North Brunswick, and North Plainfield are leaving and Middlesex and Perth Amboy will be joining.  South River, South Amboy, East Brunswick Magnet, Mother Seton, and Dunellen will remain with W+H making it an eight team division.

OTHER NEWS - the MileSplit X-C Calendar is beginning to fill out.

August 18 - first official day of practice

October 4 - Shore Coaches - once again we will have a conflict with the Fall Fair

November 8 - the State Meet

November 15 - the MoC

*****************

Don't forget the RRN (Ram Recognition Night) on June 4th.  Our team as well as all the other teams at W+H will be honored in the PAC after a dinner in the AP Room.

And then a few days later we will have our pre-season X-C meeting.

*****************

One 8th Grade Girl and one 8th Grade Boy have made a verbal commitment to run for us in the fall.  And one current 9th Grade Boy has also expressed interest in X-C.

*****************

So enjoy the Spring sports you're in and before you know it, July and August will be here and it will be time to get your X-C on!!!

Sportsmanship Awards

Two of our runners were given Athletic Sportsmanship Awards at a special luncheon this past week at the Pines Manor.  Great Job Ryan and Mo !!!

The NJISAA Prep Indoor State Meet - Results

Today the Winter Squad traveled down to The Lawrenceville School for the NJISAA State meet.  It is the Winter Season's version of the X-C Championship up at Blair.  And the good thing is the meet was closer and the flat indoor oval a lot easier than the tough Blair course.  And our X-C trio threw down some more PBs tonight.

Shweta and Jolie ran the long distance event, the 800M.  Shweta trimmed about a second and a half off of her best effort with a time of 2:46.79 IPB.  Jolie shaved a half second with her time of 2:37 IPB.

Madison ran the 55M in 8.36 IPB and ran the 200M with a time of 30.28.

The Girls scored 13 points and finished in 6th place.  The Girls B Champion was Villa Walsh with 105 points.

The Ocean Breeze Invitational - Results

Today our Indoor Track Team traveled to Staten Island to compete in the Ocean Breeze Invitational.  All three of our Frosh Girl X-C runners made the trip.

Shweta ran in two long distance events, the 800M and the 1 Mile.  In the 800M she finished in 3:00.51 which was 2 1/2 seconds off her IPB.  The Mile Run is rare since most events are metric.  This was Shweta's first attempt at the mile.  Her time was 6:53.50 IPB.  Her splits were 42, 45, 48, 55, 55, 57, 59, 52.

On a side note, back in the day, the mile was one of the premier events in track.  Check out the post of 3/9/2018 for more enlightenment.

Madison ran the 55M in 8.50 and the 200M in 30.63 IPB.  It was her first time running the 200M.

Jolie ran the anchor for the 4x200M Relay.

Pictures will be added here if any of our girls are posted.

What's next?

Yesterday's post was the final installment of our end-of-year X-C "lists" which were uploaded every Wednesday.  The blog will continue to follow our X-C runners as they finish up the Indoor Track season followed by their performances outdoors in the Spring.  In March, I will be sending out the traditional recruitment letter to current 8th Graders in hopes that they will run in the Fall for the Upper School.  And before you know it, school will be almost over which means the pre-season Zoom meeting in early June.  If you're serious about running again this fall, I hope to see you then.
